Country profile

A long Pacific edge, a varied national story.

Chile stretches along the western side of South America, between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes. Its neighbours are Peru, Bolivia and Argentina. Santiago is the capital, Spanish is the main language, and the national currency is the Chilean peso.

Distance gives the country much of its variety. Northern desert landscapes, central valleys and cities, southern forests and Patagonian mountains create different settings for settlement, production and cultural life.

Chile’s relationship with Uganda dates to 1964. Honorary representation in Kampala and diplomatic coverage from Nairobi provide institutional links across the distance.

Food & agricultural systemsFollow the product beyond production

A proposal can focus on processing, quality assurance, packaging, storage or specialist knowledge. Establish the product, intended buyer and operating conditions before selecting a solution.

  • Describe the value chain.
  • Set out quality and capacity needs.
  • Plan for training and local support.
Energy & enabling servicesDefine the task the system must perform

Energy-related enquiries need a clear demand profile, location and operating model. Technical choices should follow the requirement, available resources and applicable local rules.

  • Specify demand and the intended site.
  • Identify the appropriate technical counterpart.
  • Account for operation and maintenance.
Technology & specialist knowledgeStart with a practical use

Global services and technical expertise become more useful when tied to a defined organisational need. Agree what is to be delivered and how the receiving team will use it.

  • Name the problem and intended user.
  • Agree a limited first activity.
  • Define support and knowledge transfer.
Investment & commercial preparationMake the first discussion specific

Explain the organisation, project, target market and proposed resources. For goods, establish the route, standards, payment terms and the responsibilities of the buyer and supplier.

  • Prepare a short project brief.
  • Verify the proposed counterpart.
  • Use the relevant agency for current requirements.
Prepare the enquiry

Be clear about the next decision.

Introduce your organisation and the opportunity or need. Ask for a named institution, a suitable counterpart or the information required to assess the proposal.

There is more than one Chile to meet.

A desert amphitheatre, a Pacific city and a Patagonian mountain face reveal different rhythms of place.

Give a region time to become more than a stop on a map. Understanding distance, season and local context makes the country’s variety easier to appreciate.

Quinchamalí and Santa Cruz de Cuca pottery is recognisable through its dark forms and white accents. Functional objects and expressive figures carry knowledge developed and passed on by local makers.

UNESCO placed the tradition on its List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding in 2022. Looking at the work also means recognising the people and conditions that allow the skill to continue.
