Country profile

An archipelago with a world of perspectives.

Indonesia stretches across an extensive island chain in Southeast Asia, linking the Indian and Pacific oceans. Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and the eastern islands bring different landscapes and local traditions to the national story.

Bahasa Indonesia is the national language and the rupiah is the currency. The red-and-white flag and the Garuda Pancasila emblem express a shared national identity across a culturally diverse country.

Jakarta is a major centre for government and commerce. Nusantara is being developed in East Kalimantan as the new capital; the formal transfer depends on the relevant presidential decree.

Country insights

Look beyond the familiar postcard.

A country of islands is also a country of working landscapes, cities and local knowledge. A rice terrace, a batik workshop and a busy urban district each introduce another part of Indonesia.

Let the place shape the enquiry. Culture, commerce and learning become more meaningful when linked to a particular community or institution.

Indonesian batik was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. Its craft and cultural meanings reach beyond the finished textile.
