Country profile

An island perspective with an African connection.

The Republic of Mauritius lies in the south-west Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar. Port Louis is the capital and the Mauritian rupee is the currency.

Mauritian Creole, English and French are prominent in daily life and public communication. The country’s varied communities contribute to its cuisine, religious traditions, music and cultural expression.

The island’s story extends beyond its coastline. Port Louis, upland landscapes, gardens and the heritage sites of Le Morne and Aapravasi Ghat offer different perspectives on its past and present.

For Uganda, honorary representation and an official scholarship nomination channel provide concrete points of contact, alongside potential business and institutional exchange.
